How this is calculated
We add your desired income to your overheads to get the total revenue your business needs to bring in. Then we work out how many hours you'll actually bill in a year — based on your working days, time off, and how much of each day is billable (not admin, quoting, or travel). Divide one by the other, and that's the rate you need to be charging just to hit your goals — before you've thought about profit margin or growth.
This is a starting point, not a final answer. Market rates, competition, and what your clients are willing to pay all matter too. But most service business owners have never actually run this number — and it's hard to price with confidence if you haven't.
